Forging Ahead

November 14, 2017

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

In our continuing efforts towards institutional quality and improvements to benefit student success, I have a few important and exciting developments to share with you.

To begin with, I am very pleased to announce that NPU has secured official Approval to Operate from the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE). NPU’s awarding of BPPE approval required a ten-month process, which included two detailed stages of rigorous scrutiny, including an onsite visit by a seasoned BPPE team. NPU provided a detailed commitment and plan geared towards students’ educational endeavors and future careers. NPU also addressed all of BPPE concerns, including past negative media. NPU put its best foot forward, passed both stages, and obtained full direct approval from this reputable government agency to operate as an institution of higher education.

Next, I am extremely pleased to announce the following. Northwestern Polytechnic University has applied for Eligibility from the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). WSCUC has reviewed the application and determined that the University is eligible to proceed with an application for Candidacy and Initial Accreditation. A determination of Eligibility is not a formal status with the WASC Senior College and University Commission, nor does it ensure eventual accreditation. It is a preliminary finding that the institution is potentially accreditable and can proceed within five years of its Eligibility determination to be reviewed for Candidacy or Initial Accreditation status with the Commission. Questions about Eligibility may be directed to the institution or to WSCUC at wascsr@wascsenior.org or (510) 748-9001.

Third, during the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) August 2017 meeting, the Council found NPU to be compliant with the Accreditation Criteria, meaning ACICS will continue NPU’s grant of recognition. The Council’s action confirms its continued confidence in NPU, as our institution has enjoyed continuous, uninterrupted accreditation/approval from ACICS since 1998. ACICS has submitted a formal petition for recognition as a national accreditor to the Department of Education (ED). If ACICS is ultimately successful in this petition, then ACICS may once again be recognized by the ED.

In the best interest of our students and graduates, NPU fully supports ACICS' effort to regain its recognition by the ED. We continue to maintain our relationship and work with ACICS through this endeavor, because any positive outcomes may be highly beneficial to all NPU students and alumni. As a result, NPU has undergone the extensive effort of applying for renewal of its recognition by ACICS.

Throughout this entire time, every campus department has been working tirelessly through numerous initiatives to pursue any possible options that may yield the most favorable outcomes for our students, graduates, and extended NPU family.

I hope that you find this accreditation update informative and reassuring. We continue to keep the best short and long term interests of our students firmly in mind as we work hard to assure NPU’s future. NPU has been successfully operating and providing quality education for the past 33 years, and we are excited to move forward together with each and every one of you as we head into our next 33 years.

Best wishes,

Peter Hsieh

President
